According to Reverend Hooper, we ALL have a black veil swathing our faces. We all hide the truth from each other and God. We are not honest.
Here are some questions discussed in class about "The Minister's Black Veil" by Nathaniel Hawthorne:

As you know, we have been reading "The Minister's Black Veil" by Nathaniel Hawthorne.
We have discovered:
In regard to writing style, this is what we have discovered:
On Wednesday, we began to read a short story by Nathaniel Hawthorne, "The Minister's Black Veil". So far, we have discovered that Hawthorne has a knack for eloquence, meaning that he had excellent word choice. Students highlighted unfamiliar words so that we, as a class, could look them up with VISUAL THESAURUS. Of course, after determining the meaning of each word, we can better understand the meaning of the story.
Keep in mind that there are many steps that our brains work through to fully process information. BE SURE to make yourself go deeper into the process. KNOWLEDGE COMPREHENSION APPLICATION ANALYSIS SYNTHESIS EVALUATION Have a great day! -Mrs. Coller SENTENCE STRUCTURE FOCUS:
1. Do you know the 6 Traits of Good Writing? To practice, see if you can list them all without looking at your notes. 2. We continued with Friday's lecture by writing a sentence about the woman buying pumpkins. In order to show you how sentence structure can enhance your writing, we began by listing the aspects of the woman. After that, we came up with a sentence which encompassed all of the characteristics that we listed on the board. We created a sentence similar to the following: **As the cold wind blew through the city streets, a gorgeous woman with badly painted fingernails perused the rounded orange gourds and finally chose one as a surprise for her son. SENTENCE STRUCTURE can also be changed by piecing the sections of the sentence together in a different way than expected. A quick example is: Original sentence: I like pie because it tastes so delicious. Unexpected Sentence Structure: Because the pie tastes so good, I like it. (Simple example, but you get the idea.) Have a great night! -Mrs. Coller Today in class we chose to take a more detailed look at the characters of Myrtle Wilson and Tom Buchanan, who are both married to other people, but are having an affair with each other.
You determined that Tom is: *succinct (brief and to the point) -----He says very little, but seems to be quite strong in his opinions Myrtle: *is a brat. -----She buys whatever she wants without thinking ahead or thinking of consequences. *wants to be thought of as wealthy, but isn't. -----She purchases anything she wants with Tom's money, and has furnished her apartment with large opulent furniture, too big for the place. -----Immediately upon returning to the "love nest", she wants to invite people over to show off. *ignorant. -----She doesn't know what kind of dog she wants or if the one she has purchased is a male or female. -----She won't take a stand on her opinion of her sister's looks; instead, she says that her sister is said to be beautiful by "people who should know". YOUR HOMEWORK: Use the second chart in your Gatsby packet to brainstorm about ideas for your writing assignment, which is to write a character description similar to the one about Myrtle. You are to avoid descriptions TELLING the reader what to think of your character while describing the character with his/her words, appearance, actions, thoughts, and emotions. In the end, your IDEA of your character should be clear in the reader's head. Have a good night. -Mrs. Coller
***BORING & TERRIBLE: Myrtle Wilson is the kind of person who... ***INTERESTING IDEAS given in a way that will keep the readers' attention: Author lets the reader see what the characters look like, what they say, other people's responses to that character, the character's thoughts, etc. Link for Handouts: Student Instruction Worksheet Graphic Organizer for the Day Excerpt from Gatsby Have a great night! -Mrs. Coller Today we had a QUIZ on the second portion of literary terms from your packet. STUDY!! You will have another quiz this Friday on the last section of literary terms from the packet. Again, I say: STUDY!! Have a great night! -Mrs. Coller We read a story called, "The Secret Life of Walter Mitty" in which a man day dreams about a life opposite of the one he has. This is what we discovered:
In reality, WM is: -simple-minded, miserable, basic, old, unrealistic, wannabe, wimpy, pacifist, weak-minded, daydreamer In his dreams, WM is: -innovative, adventurous, intimidating, manly, successful, intelligent, headstrong, dangerous, always in control, attractive, glorious The author uses ORGANIZATION in this story to show us WM's character by CONTRASTing the reality with the daydream. In class today, your job is to:

Have a great night! -Mrs. Coller Today we will head down to the auditorium to get our school photos done. Yay!
Have a great weekend! -Mrs. Coller For the last couple days, we have been reading a short story called, "A&P". In this short story, whether you liked it or not, you found that the author shows strong VOICE. This is something that you will practice doing throughout the school year, so don't forget that, if you write with strong VOICE, you can say:
In class, we analyzed the character of Sammy, the narrator. Then we looked at the VOICE of the author. We determined that John Updike's VOICE is strong and follows the above requirements. To further emphasize VOICE, we split into groups to write the same story using LITTLE voice. Our homework assignment is to write a ONE PAGE essay about a moment in our own lives. This essay should be filled with YOUR VOICE and will be graded according to the 5/3/1 rubric handed out in class. Have a great night. |
