Today in class we noted the differences between CHICAGO in the 1905ish era and CHITTENANGO in the same era. I will give you up to 10 points on your next homework assignment if you leave a comment letting me know of one difference. If someone else has already given me that, you have to come up with a new one.
Today's homework: Determine THREE topics that Upton Sinclair is stressing here in chapter four of The Jungle. Bring the list with you tomorrow. It may be advantageous for you to make a chart. We will be filling it in later. -Mrs. Coller Upton Sinclair finally allowed us to leave the wedding. I was exhausted!!
Yesterday you discussed some aspects of the plot that you expected to find after chapter 1: *The people would be oppressed because of their STATUS AS IMMIGRANTS. *The people would find difficulties because of their POVERTY. *The workers would have hardships at work because of WORKING CONDITIONS. *The people would find HAPPINESS in spite of their world. Today you read chapter 2 silently in class while looking for any of those plot points. Click here to get a chart to fill out if you didn't make one on your own. -Mrs. Coller Today in class we continued to read chapter one of Upton Sinclair's The Jungle. Some of your classmates said that:
They thought Sinclair was too wordy. They didn't understand all the sentences, but they thought the book could be good later. They thought that Jurgis and Ona would die at the end of the book and get put into the hamburger. They thought it was a gory book, but nothing bad happened yet. They are still waiting for the gross part. They couldn't imagine a world with so little music. They thought Tamoszius Kuszleika was a little wild. They wanted to hear from Upton Sinclair that Jurgis and Ona were in love; so far, they only heard it from me. Then we talked about: -the dancing, the hand-me-down clothes, the lovers, the work that Mikolas had BY THE WAY, Mrs. Klucznik sent me this AWESOME grammar exercise: GRAMMAR NINJAS!! Go to the grammar section of this website to play. Have fun!! -Mrs. Co Today we talked about Upton Sinclair's famous novel, The Jungle.
*Muckrakers *The Progressive Era (which I don't see as progressive) *Factory conditions in meat packing industry *Upton Sinclair's purpose for writing this book *Banned and censored books *An article that Sinclair write to the NYTimes regarding the "disappearance" of his book from libraries in Chicago & St. Louis, two huge meat packing cities (CLICK HERE to read the article. Very interesting.) Think about THIS: Sinclair CHANGED EVERYTHING with a book. Hmm. What kind of power is that?? -Mrs. Coller _Today will consist of:
