Today we read about Bubble Creek, a place where people and chickens can accidentally WALK without knowing they are on sludge. The creek bubbles because of the chemical reactions taking place under the surface. Using the situation for their own good, as usual, the meat packers chose to scrape the sludge off the creek to sell as lard to the public. Money happily exchanged, the citizens of Chicago would unknowingly purchase dangerous chemicals for use in their everyday cooking. Through all this, the meat packers grew richer daily, while the common man struggled for his every breath.
(FYI - I used brush stroke sentences for that entire paragraph. Respond with a brush stroke, also having to do with The Jungle, and I will give you a homework pass. This offer expires Friday, April 29.) -Miss White Jurgis got a new job in less than a half hour! Then he decided to take a tour of the meat packing plant - and what a tour! The author describes the fast paced environment, the "efficient" use of the entire animal, and the amazement of Jurgis and Ona as they see the miracle that is Packingtown.
For Extra Credit, find me a yummy vegetarian recipe that any one of us can make to eat while we read this book. Give it to me in class. -Miss White Welcome to the Jungle of Chicago, Folks, where children play on trash heaps and ice for refrigeration has filtered through chemical waste before it gets transported to people's basements. Nice, huh?
Your HOMEWORK for TUESDAY is to complete chapter 2 Study Guide. Enjoy. -Miss White |
