Today, we broke up into groups and made a plot of decline by identifying 6 main points of the story that represent the "To Build a Fire" as a whole. The plot of decline shows a gradual degradation towards the man's death in the case of this story.
Quiz on Naturalist characteristics, "To Build a Fire," and study your brush strokes because I may have you answer questions using one. Have a wonderful weekend, Mr. Francisco

Some of you think "To Build a Fire" is really boring, ok most of you. However, think about why Jack London is writing this story. Also think about what makes the story boring to you as a reader.
We compared knowledge vs. instinct today with the text. Remember, the man possesses more knowledge (or so we would like to think) and the dog possesses more instinct. However, the dog seems to be acquiring knowledge with his instinct. The man, on the other hand, does not follow his instincts. He stops to eat, rest, build a fire... in -50 degree weather!!! I don't know about you, but I'd be bolting for camp. Finish the story for tonight and we'll discuss it Today, we read 2 articles in class that were about literary naturalism. You all highlighted useful information from these texts such as definitions and characteristics. Yes, I realize that these texts were quite difficult, but I knew you all could sort through the information to find useful information.
Then, you did the graphic organizer to sort your information. If you did not finish it, finish it for homework and complete the quote/explanation side of the homework. You will have to find a sentence or a few sentences in "To Build a Fire" that exhibits naturalist qualities. Then, give me an explanation of how it exhibits it (could be the man vs. nature setting, deterministic qualities, etc.) Today, we took a quick "quiz" about your knowledge of naturalism or modernism. We then learned about the participle brush stroke and action verb brush stroke.
Here is more help on participles if you need it! Your homework is to read "To Build a Fire" pgs. 497-500. Make sure to identify 3 action verbs while you're reading. There are many! Have a great night, Mr. Francisco Pull up the following items for me to check:
1. Annotated Bibliography 2. A database that you find useful for your research. 3. A website or other resource that you find useful for MLA citation. You have 5 minutes to do this before I come around and check. I would like 4 sources that you are using for your research by the end of the class period to show me. Visit this website! It will help you generate citations for your annotated bibliographies!
Click me!! -Mr. Francisco Today we spent time in the PC lab working on your annotated bibliographies. So far, the majority of you are making great progress on your research. Remember, I am looking for 6 sources with a brief 2-3 sentence summary of the article and 1-2 sentences about its usefulness in the area of research for other people. If you have any questions over the weekend, feel free to post them here and I will try to check this blog over the weekend.
Monday we will be in the PC lab again, so be ready to work because this is the last opportunity I will be giving you all to work on your annotated bibliographies. It was great to meet some of your parents during Open House! Have a great weekend everyone! Mr. Francisco Today, we discussed the ending of "A&P" and whether or not Sammy's actions were worth it. As a class, we reached a few conclusions by developing possible themes. Some of you had some great ideas! Here are a few that stuck out to me.
-Think before you act. -Your valiant actions may not always produce rewards. -Stay true to yourself and your beliefs. We then connected the themes to Robert Louis Stevenson's "What Man May Learn, What Man May Do." Remember your assignment for homework! If you have questions, feel free to comment on here! -Mr. Francisco Today, we began to read "A&P" by John Updike. Please finish this for homework along with the questions I gave you in class.
Keep practicing your writing brushstrokes! Tomorrow we will practice with these a little more, and we will also be discussing "A&P" in greater detail, specifically themes. There is a lot of potential in these classes, so Mrs. Coller and I are going to challenge you. We promise that it will be worth it towards the end of the year. If you ever need any help, feel free to come 10th period. Also, remember to BRING YOUR COVERED TEXTBOOKS!! Have a great night, Mr. Francisco After we took a literary terms quiz, we sauntered pensively down to the auditorium for photograph opportunities.
Look on the previous day's blog for a copy of the notes for this quiz. Have a great weekend! -Mrs. Coller |
