Students handed in their chapter three chapter questions, so if you were not here, be ready to give them to me when you get back. In your binders, we analyzed the following:
Have a great day! -Mrs. Coller 1. I did a homework check to see if the students completed the assigned reading for OMAM chapter 2.
2. We filled out a portion of the character chart (in the OMAM packet right before the chapter questions). We will worry about the symbols behind the characters at some other point. 3. We discussed characters like Curley and his wife. When looking at their relationship, the reader will see that it is not healthy. In fact, Curley's wife really has no healthy relationships in her life, nor is she "allowed" to because of her overbearing and bullying husband. It is possible that she is not a "tramp", as Candy calls her, but is instead just a sad and desperate woman seeking attention. Since she is beautiful and she is on a ranch with several men who rarely get to see women, she sees her advantage - her hips, her shape, her voice, her body - and uses it to get someone - anyone - to talk with her. Homework for tomorrow = Read chapter 3 and do the chapter questions. Have a In your packet, you probably noticed that there are questions labelled Identifying Facts. The next section is labelled Interpret Meanings. The reason for this is so that you will know the difference between the two. The second section is slightly more in-depth than the first.
Homework DUE WEDNESDAY: Read chapter two of the text and complete chapter two questions. Have a great day! -Mrs. Coller Don't you just love being read to? I do. So today I read chapter one of Steinbeck's Of Mice and Men to my students. In this chapter, the reader meets George and Lennie, migrant workers in the 1930s in California near the Gabilan mountains. George is a small strong man, but Lennie, his opposite, is large, lumbering and a bit slow.
Homework: Complete all ten questions from your green packet about chapter one. I looked at your comments from yesterday. Some of you actually used capital letters, periods, and correct spelling. Some of you were sadly lacking in this area.
Your first job TODAY: REPLY to what you have already written, but fix your mistakes. (You are sitting at a computer, so I expect that you have access to dictionary.com, grammar girl, etc. You also have access to ME since I am walking around the room chatting with you about your new-found information. Problem: Some of you don't have comments listed yet. Since this is your first and only MP3 grade, this means you have a ZERO for the marking period so far. If I were you, I would fix this ASAP. Your second job TODAY: Look up information about John Steinbeck - our author. Find resources on the JOHN STEINBECK page of this website. Make another comment, this time with correct grammar and punctuation. This comment should be on THIS BLOG entry, not yesterday's. Have a great day! -Mrs. Coller This past week we have been looking at photographs by Dorthea Lange, one of foremost photographers for documenting the Great Depression and the Dust Bowl.
Check out the link under OMAM, then comment on this blog posting about what you see. Keep in mind that your comments must be:
(In other words, I don't mind comments about the guy's funny haircut as long as you add an addition comment that actually is part of an intelligent discussion about the time period.) Have a great day! -Mrs. Coller |
