Today in class we will discuss the stressors that they characters in the text may have experienced during chapters 1-5 of Lost in Shangri-la by Mitchell Zuckoff.

Today we read quietly in class.  I explained that it is important to interact with a text while you read, so I have given you a worksheet that will help you focus on specifics in the text.

Click here for a copy of the day's worksheet (due Monday).  Please read the directions and answer the question as fully as possible.  You may want to look up the definition of "stress".

Have a great weekend.  Eat healthy and take care of yourselves; so many people are getting sick these days.

Lost in Shangri-la by Mitchell Zuckoff

What an amazing intro!!  We read the "Note to Reader" and the first chapter, then discussed:
  • Author's voice
  • WWII trivia
  • Local history - Go, OWEGO and BINGHAMTON!
  • Primary sources
  • The need for affidavits after the crash - Why were they created?  What kind of investigation was going on?  Why?
  • Geography - Where the heck is New Guinea?
  • Word origins - Do guinea pigs have anything to do with New Guinea?
  • Emotional responses to the story

During this book, you need to:

  • Keep track of academic vocabulary (at least one new word per chapter)
  • Track one survivor of the crash
  • Think about stress responses
  • Ask questions about WWII, technology, history of NG & USA

I am glad you like the book!!!  I think you'll enjoy reading this NON_FICTION piece of literature.  I say it surpasses Lord of the Flies by miles.  My challenge to you is to get LOTF out of the LMC and read it yourself to compare.  (It is very short, so you shouldn't have a problem with it.)

Once we finish with the mid-term, we will be reading a new book!  Yay!!  (It's a really great one, and it is non-fiction!)  Start thinking about what it would be like to be trapped in jungle island with no way to get out.  If you happen on this blog, do me a favor and tell me what you would name your island.

I might name mine something like "Nobodeeshere" or "Findus"

What would you do to survive on this island?  What food would you look for?  What rules would you establish for yourselves and others?
