Shakespeare Rebelled Against the Worst Love Cliches Ever!

9/29/2010

Yesterday we had some fun with a "mentor text", but you didn't even know it!  Shakespeare did some creative things with a few of his love sonnets.  So, to introduce you to one of them, I asked you to brainstorm and determine some of the worst, most cheesy aspects of "love".  You came up with some GREAT STUFF!
  • serenading from balconies
  • <3333 texting
  • constant Facebook status updates
  • slow-motion running through a field of flowers
  • riding off into the sunset
  • poetry
  • public displays of affection
  • locking eyes across a crowded room
  • football quarterback loves head cheerleader
  • love at 1st sight
Disclaimer: I think all of us may want a few of these at one point, but all of them together kind of make me want to hurl.  :)

So today we are looking at Shakespeare's actual Sonnet and trying to write an actual poem that looks at love from a non-cheesy "original" angle.

YOUR ASSIGNMENT FOR TONIGHT:
*Take the basic idea of "going green" and give it your own interesting angle.  You can create a commercial, a poem, a paragraph, or you can come up with your own idea for promoting environmental consciousness.  Use the IDEAS AND CONTENT RUBRIC to make sure that your final product has all the qualities that it should have.

Have a great day!

Monday! Monday! Monday!

Today we quickly reviewed Jonathan Swift's model text to determine that he was all about PERSUADING HIS AUDIENCE.  The way he chose to do this was:
  1. Explain the problem - with good, in-depth detail
  2. Offer a solution - be detailed, make sure the solution actually covers the pieces of the problem
So we brainstormed IDEAS that we could also use to PERSUADE our audience.
  1. The problem with the world today is: (Four good ones.)
  2. The problem at CHS today is: (Three good ones.)
Next we narrowed down our choices by choosing the best three and then created a chart.  From this chart, we should be able to determine which of our ideas we should explain further in an actual paper.  Don't worry; this is an in-class assignment only.  I collected your work at the end and you will get a homework grade for it if you can show participation.

Have a great night!

I hope you enjoyed your half day off, as I was working with my department on really exciting English curriculum.  I am jealous!

So... I was able to meet all of your wonderful parents tonight.  I told them how much I love your classes, and I even gave them my email address so they could check up on you.  <MuHaahaaaHaaa!!!>  Thank you, Parents, for coming to meet me.  You know where to find me if you need anything.

Friday we will be working on the IDEA writing trait.  Wait until you see the crazy plan this man has come up with to solve the country's hunger problem!

See you tomorrow.

Today we finished up the terms for Quiz 2 on Lit Elements.  Look on yesterday's blog for a link to the document.  (So far nobody has told me they printed off the terms, and I am kind of surprised.)

Tomorrow (Thursday) we will have another quiz.  Make sure you study.  Also, if you want to pick up your quizzes, take a look in the stackable bins just inside the classroom.  Your graded work is in there.  Please put it in your notebook in the correct section when you get it back.

Have a great Wednesday!

I will keep this little blog here so you and I can communicate better.  Please note that it does not replace your BRAIN.  Attend class, take notes, ask questions - these are your best and most powerful tools - not the blog.
