What do we think about when we read these chapters? Today we talked about some questions we have for the author. Some we can answer, and some we cannot. Questions that came up are:
*Why is Grandmother so negative? She seems terrible. *What are these Lithuanian words? *Why doesn't Jurgis take the family out to another place instead of Chicago? *Why would the family purchase the house if they knew that it was not what they had thought? *Why is Jurgis so proud of this place? *What "skilled labor" jobs are there? (Grandmother's son had one of those jobs and made $100/month.) *Why can't Jurgis just start taking advantage of the corruption in the system? He could be one of the men who gets extra money from the new people? *Why don't the ethnic groups warn the new immigrants about the snags? They could avoid it altogether. Good questions, Folks!! Your homework for tomorrow is to READ chapter 7. There will be an open book quiz. -Mrs. Coller
