So... We saw that Jurgis' life was almost good in chapter 21. He had an interesting job, money to live on, and a strong child that reminded him of what it was like to actually LIVE. But then it was all taken away from him (once again) when little Antanas drown in the street.
(The street had no sidewalks and was 5' below the entrance to the house, so the rain came in a river across their doorway, and they had to put rotting boards down to walk. Antanas was playing on the boards and drowned in the muddy water.) Jurgis chose to start a new life instead of caring about people. He left the city and started into the country. Read chapters 22&23 for homework.
