Today, we finished reading "Daughter of Invention" by Julia Alvarez. You all handed in graphic organizers that further your understanding of the conflict in the story between Cukita and her father.
A theme we talked about is that independence often comes with a price! In the case of the story, Cukita ends up writing another version of her speech to appease her father. However, her speech is probably more appropriate for an assembly instead of quoting Walt Whitman and overthrowing the school (especially the nuns at her school!). Cukita wants to embrace her independence and freedom of speech in America, however, we all kind of have to be appropriate, respectful, and thoughtful of others before we say something. Be sure to study for your test on Thursday! Your annotated bibliographies are due Friday if you wish to revise (I strongly encourage it!). Mr. Francisco
