Today, you took the Brush Strokes quiz. Hopefully you all did well!
We also brainstormed ideas for your short stories and you all discussed your ideas with each other. This assignment will be due Thursday! Due to the student server being down today, and many of you having it saved on the server, I will extend the deadline of your annotated bibliographies to Wednesday! Please hand in the rubric I gave to you a couple of week ago with your bibliographies if you have it. Have a great long weekend! Mr. Francisco Today we went over the Creative Writing Assignment. Then, we learned about appositive phrases and reviewed the other brush strokes. You should know the names of each brush stroke and be able to write a sentence with each brush stroke.
Homework: Brainstorm short story ideas and study for writing brush strokes quiz. Today, we reviewed the characteristics of modernism. I think the way we reviewed worked out! Let me know if you have any questions about the material. Literary styles are a bit advanced, but I know that if you all can grasp the basics of literary styles, you will be awesome readers and read texts with more analytical skills. We then viewed a Powerpoint about "The Secret Life of Walter Mitty." Remember the terms "escapism" and "satire."
Escapism- escaping mundane reality for dreams and imagination Satire- making fun of or pointing out vices in society James Thurber frames "The Secret Life of Walter Mitty" as a satire to point out the disappointment of modern life and the relationships people have. Also, the story has escapism because Walter Mitty goes in between dreams and reality. Homework: Complete the other side of the graphic organizer. Find quotes from the text that demonstrate modernist characteristics. We read 2 articles about modernism today and sorted characteristics of this literary style into a graphic organizer. A link to "The Secret Life of Walter Mitty" is available if you leave the mouse over ELA 11 Regents and then go to the short stories link.
Main point of today: Authors write to a certain literary STYLE. Their beliefs and values are often in the works that they write. Prominent literary styles arise through time, modernism being one of them. Modernism arose around the World War 1 Ear and through the Great Depression (1900-1940's). With World Wars 1 and 2, The Great Depression, and an increase in industrialism and culture, values and beliefs were questioned. If all of this bad stuff was happening, wouldn't you be questioning?? Wouldn't you be wanting a CHANGE? Modernists wrote their literature to change the way society was. Modernism = force of change Today we took the quiz on "To Build a Fire." Remember to make this up if you missed it!
We then watched "The Unicorn in the Garden," a cartoon based off of James Thurber's short story of the same title. Then, you all completed a short assignment to go along with the movie, which counted for a homework grade. If you want to get started on "The Secret Life of Walter Mitty," feel free to do so. The link to the story is under ELA 11 Regents and then "Short Stories" and then click on the story. Have a great day, Mr. Francisco |
