Theme:
**A life lesson that the author is trying to portray. This is not merely the subject of a text, like growing up; it is a statement that the author is trying to make about the subject. If growing up is the subject, an appropriate theme might be that a child's experiences truly do shape the beliefs that child will have as an adult. Motif: **A recurring object, concept, or structure in a work of literature. In the Book of Genesis, we see the motif of separation again and again throughout the story. In the very first chapter, God separates the light from the darkness. Abraham and his descendants are separated from the rest of the nation as God's chosen people. Joseph is separated from his brothers in order that life might be preserved. Today is class, we split into our new groups to determine THEMEs found in chapters 1-3 of Boy's Life. HOMEWORK is simple. Read chapter 4. -Mrs. Coller
